Big Capsicum Energy

On a recent trip to Hammer Barn (that’s Bunnings for those of you that don’t pretend you’re watching Bluey “for the kids”) I acquired a new seedling: a perfect little specimen. This capsicum seedling was destined for great things, we marvelled at the opportunities to feed our guinea pigs Kevin Bacon and Daddy Pig with fresh, home grown produce.

Along with my two children I gently placed the seedling into its brand new, shiny and ever so fancy, raised garden bed. Oh how we loved that little plant. We gazed upon it lovingly, envisioning the days it would spring forth with glorious, ripe capsicums. We found joy at the mere thought of those fuzzy little creatures, feasting upon the sweet delight.

And then a funny thing happened as the weeks rolled by. I started looking at other people’s capsicums

I noticed how their capsicum flowers bloomed earlier than mine. I peered at the perfectly shaped little flowers and wondered why mine was dry and limp, so I fertilised and watered it back to health, making a habit of nurturing this precious little plant.

Weeks rolled by and finally a capsicum sprouted from a flower. I thanked the bees for secretly nurturing my plant in the background – life is so busy after all. But my capsicum, my glorious, fresh and crunchy capsicum, was not quite what I expected.

You see, I grew quite possibly the world’s smallest capsicum

Why oh why was my capsicum so small? When everyone else was harvesting enormous capsicums, worthy of some home and gardening magazine! Why was my capsicum destined to be so tiny, so insignificant in the spectrum of capsicum growth?

Then came the wisdom I didn’t know I needed

My 5 year old, with her rose coloured glasses and childlike innocence said the greatest thing:

“This capsicum is perfect”.

Perfect for who? I spat. How could such a small, insignificant capsicum, be perfect to anyone? And that was the moment I realised. I needed to stop comparing my capsicum with other people’s. This was the perfect capsicum for us, just the right size for our hungry guinea pigs. It didn’t need to be enormous, fancy or award winning. It just needed to be the right size for us.

Be so busy focusing on your own business, you don’t notice everyone else’s

The capsicums grow bigger on the other side of the fence.

When we stay in our lane, and pour ourselves into our own business, we don’t have time to play the comparison game. Your business is the best business for YOU, because it’s yours.

You nurtured it from the beginning and what comes out of it, is up to you!
